Elephant and Jeep Safari experience in Kaziranga National Park ~

As we keep conducting Elephant and Jeep safari rides across the various ranges of Kaziranga National Park, we try to narrate our experiences with our guests of arranging these safari rides from the various entry points at the Bagori, Kohora, Agoratoli and Burapahar safari ranges. Elephant safari rides into Kaziranga National Park are conducted only at the Bagori and Kohora safari ranges in the early hours of the morning at 5 AM and 6.30 AM slots. The jeep safari rides start at 7.30 AM in the morning slot and entry into the reserves of Kaziranga National Park continue upto 9.45 AM. In the afternoon again the entry starts at 1.30 PM and continues upto 2 PM. In the central and western ranges of the Kaziranga National Park, the Jeep safari rides last for about 1 hour and 30 minutes while at the eastern and burapahar ranges these rides last for about 2 hours.

The eastern (Agoratoli) range is recommended for safari for birding enthusiasts as the rush is less here and the chances of sighting the various bird species of Kaziranga National Park are possible here. The eastern range also has fair population of the tigers of Kaziranga Tiger Reserve ans sightings of tigers are often reported here as well. Central range (Kohora) has the highest footfall of tourists as this is the most accessible range from the most available hotels and resorts of Kaziranga National Park and the safari rates are also cheaper in this particular range. While Indian nationals are allowed to go for Jeep safari rides across all the four safari ranges of Kaziranga National Park, the elephant safari rides for Indians are allowed in the Western (Bagori) range only. Entrance for elephant safari at the central range viz. Kohora is restricted for foreign nationals and VIPs only.

The entrance to the Bonroja Motel at Bagori Safari range ~ Kaziranga ~ Assam ~ India

We were once touring Kaziranga National Park with our visitors from Bangalore and we were staying at the Bonroja Motel at the Bagori Safari range of Kaziranga National Park. The Bonroja motel is located just adjacent to the entrance of the Bagori safari range of Kaziranga National Park and so if you are staying here taking the early morning (5 AM) elephant ride into the interiors of Kaziranga becomes easier for you as you do not need to travel for 30 minutes to reach Bagori from Kohora. We choose our visitors stay at Bagori range when they have an early morning elephant safari ride here at Kaziranga National Park so to avoid the unnecessary hassle of having to get up at 4 AM and rush towards Bagori for the Elephant ride. The Elephant safari slots are assigned to tourists only a night before the date of safari and so you cannot assure to get a 6.30 AM slot even if you book the safari much well in advance. So in order to avoid this hassle we recommend you to choose to stay closer to Bagori if you are not much of a morning person and would want to sleep a little longer in the mornings. Our guests were very sceptical about getting up so early in the morning and also they did not want to miss out on the chance of a once in a lifetime opportunity of going into the forest reserves of Kaziranga on an Elephant ride so they took our advice to chose to stay at the Bonroja motel at Bagori Safari range of Kaziranga National Park.

The Bagori view point at Bagori Safari range ~ Kaziranga ~ Assam ~ India

We had reached Kaziranga National Park in the evening from Shillong and we checked into the Bonroja Motel for our night halt. There were four guests travelling with us and they were allocated their double occupancy rooms at the Bonroja Motel. The Bonroja Motel has around 10 rooms (5 Double occupancy and 5 Deluxe Double occupancy). The top floor has the accommodations while the ground floor has the lobby area, restaurant and the dorm room for stay. As it was the month of January in the winters the sunset happens early and it was already pitch dark at around 5.30 PM. We took a short walk around the huge area of the Bagori Forest range office and then returned to the hotel. The hotel staff had lit a bonfire for us and the other guests as well. There were four other guests from Chennai as well staying at the Bonroja motel for that night. All of us got to know each other while sitting around the bonfire and interestingly two of the other guests would be travelling with us to Majuli island the next day and would be staying at our Eco Camp – the La Lolat Eco Camp at Majuli. The motel staff took our order for an early dinner as the entire group (9 of us) were scheduled to for an elephant safari ride into the interiors of Kaziranga National Park at 5 AM in the morning. While two guys from the group and I got us a little rum to beat the cold, the other members of the group spent their time around the bonfire. Dinner was served at 8 PM at the huge restaurant area of the Bonroja motel at the bagori safari range of Kaziranga National Park. We had rice, dal, mixed vegetables. matar paneer, with green salad, one chutney of coriander and mint leaves, pickles and papad. The fish curry was tangy made with elephant apple that imparted the sour taste to the curry. We did not eat much as we did not want to have an upset stomach in the wee hours of the morning. We returned to our rooms by 9.30 PM to set our alarm at 4.15 AM.

Everybody were up at around 4.15 AM and we got ready quickly to go to the elephant riding range at bagori in Kaziranga National Park. We arrived at the counter and one of my colleagues handed us our passes and guided us to the Elephant riding point. Many other tourists had also come to Bagori to enjoy their elephant ride from Kohora area as well. We climbed on top of the elephant backs and shortly we were ready to go into our rides. The guests were accommodated on two elephants and I climbed on another elephant with other guests. It is totally a different experience riding on the Elephant back as one gets the real feel of a jungle safari ride with the humps and the bumps. The weather was quite foggy due to cold and visibility was not quite fare. The sun was rising and in sometime the sight clear up for us. A little while into the ride we got lucky to spot our first rhinoceros here at Kaziranga National Park grazing in the open fields. The Mahout took the elephant closer to the rhinoceros and we got lucky to sight it from a very close distance. The rhinoceros looked very used to the sight of visitors coming close to watch it on the elephant back and it did not even shy away. It kept grazing while we took our pictures.

We kept riding further ahead next to silently spot a herd of hog deers. The animal herd was grazing in the early hours of the morning and we took a sneak peak into them. After this we spotted a few more rhinos and then we returned back to the starting point. The ride lasted for about 45 minutes. We thanked the mahout and returned back to the forest range office at bagori. Here we could see the second slot visitors getting ready to go for their elephant rides. We walked around the area for a while and then came back to the Bonroja Motel. Some of the visitors went in for a quick nap while I ordered for breakfast. Everybody was up by 8 AM again and we had our breakfast at the Bonroja motel. Our jeeps arrived and as we were nine members we had to take two jeeps as one jeep can accommodate a maximum of six members only. My colleague Mr. Krishna who operates out of Kaziranga National Park had also joined us for the ride. He is a good bird guide as well and so I asked him to accompany us on the jeep ride into Kaziranga National Park.

We started at 9 AM for our jeep ride. Krishna took us to the forest office of Bagori where we cleared our entry formalities and proceeded on our ride. We continued to the forest office of Bagori where we cleared our entry formalities and proceeded on our ride. We continued to drive in the open jeep (five members in each Jeep). The Jeeps were riding together so that Krishna could tell us about the birds here. A little into the ride we spotted an Asiatic wild water buffalo crossing the road ahead of us. The animal took its time to cross the road while we watched it and clicked our pictures. Shortly we continued riding further into the Bagori safari range of Kaziranga National Park and our next sighting were of many bird species of the likes of Great Indian Hornbill, Pelicans, Lesser Adjutant Storks, Black Necked Crane, Kingfishers, Egrets, Bengal Florican, Eagles, Owls, etc. In the open area we sighted about 5 rhinoceros some of them were grazing while some lying in a pool of muddy water. The jeep took us further into the forest reserves of Kaziranga National Park and we spotted a herd of wild elephants as well. The jeep finally arrived at the Donga tower where it made a halt and we got down from our jeeps and took a walk across the area. There is a huge water reservoir here that has various species of fish here. The most visible here are the Sital fish that keeps jumping in and out of the waters. From here we get to view the beautiful landscapes of Kaziranga National Park as well. We spotted additional four rhinos from a distance. This place also has a recording of the water levels that is caused during the monsoon season every year and it is surprising that the entire area gets submerged during the month of June thru August. Our jeep safari ride ended here and then we were dropped at our hotel from where we packed our bags and continued on our tour further to Majuli Island.
